When we started Aarna, one of our biggest goals (apart from creating clothes we love) was to build something thoughtful and something that made us feel good about what we were putting out into the world.
Like most clothing brands, we go through a lot of sampling and cutting before a final collection comes together. That process, while essential, leaves us with fabric scraps and samples that didn’t quite make the cut. For a while, we just held on to them, not wanting to throw them away but not sure what to do with them either.
That’s when the idea struck. Why not give these leftover pieces a second life?
The Idea: Upcycled Fabric Bags
Instead of letting those fabrics collect dust (or worse, end up in landfill), we decided to turn them into something useful, functional, and still very us. And that’s how our upcycled bag project was born.
The concept is simple. Take what’s left over from our collections. Be it scraps, cuttings, rejected samples and turn them into unique, handmade bags. No two are the same, and each one carries a piece of our design story.
The Heart of the Project: #MakanakaPlastic
To bring this idea to life, we’ve partnered with #MakanakaPlastic, https://www.instagram.com/makanakaplastic/?igsh=aW1hZGhtMDgwaXE%3D# a local Goan movement started by Sensible.Earth aimed at providing a sustainable alternative to single use plastic. They turn old clothing into reusable bags and are made by local women.
Working with #MakanakaPlastic felt like the perfect match. It allowed us to not only reduce waste, but also support a community of skilled women who are deeply passionate about their craft. Each bag is lovingly made by hand, stitched from materials that would’ve otherwise been discarded.
Packaging, Reimagined: Your Clothes Come Packed in These Bags
One thing we’re especially excited about? These upcycled bags aren’t just a separate product, they’re now part of our packaging.
Every time you place an order with us, your clothes will come packed inside one of these fabric bags completely free. It’s our way of saying thank you, while also encouraging you to reuse and repurpose them however you like: as lunch bags, makeup pouches, travel pouches, or even gift wraps.
It’s beautiful, functional, and sustainable and way better than a disposable plastic or paper bag, don’t you think?
Why It Matters
We’re a small team, but we believe every little step counts. This project is a way for us to take responsibility for the waste we create and be more intentional with how we use materials.
The fashion industry is known for its waste, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There are creative solutions everywhere sometimes, even in the scrap pile.
Thanks for being on this journey with us. Supporting small, mindful brands like ours really does make a difference and we’re so grateful you’re here.
With love,
Padma & Mythili
